MPU

Also known as: Medical-Psychological Assessment Germany · Medizinisch-Psychologische Untersuchung

The MPU (Medizinisch-Psychologische Untersuchung) is Germany's authority-ordered Medical-Psychological Assessment — typically required after a licence is revoked. It evaluates driving fitness, self-reflection, and risk behaviour.

An MPU is typically ordered when justified doubts about driving fitness exist. The most frequent triggers:

  • Alcohol-related driving offences (1.6‰ blood alcohol or repeated offences below),
  • Drug or medication abuse,
  • Excess points in the German Driver Suitability Register,
  • Traffic-related crimes.

The assessment is conducted by an officially recognised assessment centre and consists of three parts:

  1. Medical — laboratory tests, anamnesis,
  2. Psychomotor performance — reaction time, concentration, attention,
  3. Psychological interview — reflection on the underlying issues.

The MPU is colloquially called “Idiotentest” — a misleading term that does not capture the actual diagnostic and rehabilitative purpose.
