Theoriestunden-Pflicht (mandatory theory hours)

Also known as: Mandatory theory lessons · Theory-hour requirement · Theorie-Pflichtstunden

Klasse B candidates in Germany must complete 14 theory double-lessons: twelve on shared subject matter and two specific to Klasse B. Each double-lesson runs 90 minutes.

Theoretical training is regulated in Annex 1 and Annex 2 of the Driver-Training Ordinance (FahrschAusbO). For Klasse B:

  • 12 double-lessons of shared subject matter common to all classes (traffic signs, law, physics of motion, road safety etc.),
  • 2 double-lessons of class-specific subject matter for Klasse B passenger cars,
  • For a second qualification (e.g. after holding Klasse A) the shared part is reduced.

A double-lesson runs 90 minutes of instruction. Missing individual mandatory lessons delays the booking of the theory exam — TÜV and DEKRA require a complete training record before they will let a candidate sit the exam.

The mandatory hours cannot be replaced by online self-study, although hybrid models with formally certified online theory teaching are now increasingly accepted across the federal states. The exact rules vary by state, so the local school confirms what counts.
