Grundfahraufgabe (basic-driving manoeuvre)

Also known as: Basic driving manoeuvre · Grundfahraufgaben

Grundfahraufgaben are the mandatory manoeuvres in the German Klasse B practical exam, set out in Annex 7 FeV — for example reverse cornering, parking, emergency braking, and turning in a tight space.

Annex 7 of the Driver Licensing Ordinance (FeV) sets out at least three Grundfahraufgaben for Klasse B. Typical examples:

  • Emergency braking with maximum deceleration from around 50 km/h,
  • Reverse cornering to the left or right around an obstacle,
  • Three-point turn in a tight space,
  • Parking — diagonal (forwards or reverse), parallel (reverse), or angle parking.

The examiner decides which manoeuvres will actually be driven on the day. They are usually completed on a practice area, a quiet road, or a suitable car park.

Grundfahraufgaben are not an end in themselves — they verify vehicle handling under controlled conditions before the open-road part of the exam begins. A weak shoulder check or a missed mirror routine here is treated as a serious defect and can fail the exam outright.
