Sonderfahrt (special-purpose lesson)

Also known as: German mandatory driving lessons

Sonderfahrten are Germany's legally required special-purpose driving lessons in Klasse B: five overland, four motorway, three at dawn or in darkness. Each is 45 minutes.

Sonderfahrten are the Klasse B mandatory lessons set out in Annex 3 of the German Driving Instruction Ordinance (FahrschAusbO):

  • 5 overland lessons on federal, state, or county roads,
  • 4 motorway or expressway lessons,
  • 3 lessons at dawn or in darkness.

Each lesson lasts 45 minutes and typically costs more than a regular lesson because longer routes and increased driving time are involved. Sonderfahrten may begin only once the candidate has reliably mastered the basics.

The order is not legally fixed — many driving schools start with the overland sessions, since route familiarity and driving fluency build up most naturally there.
