Prüfungsfahrt (practical exam drive)

Also known as: Practical driving exam · Praxisprüfung

The Prüfungsfahrt is the German Klasse B practical driving exam: at least 45 minutes of driving on a route chosen by the examiner, plus basic-driving manoeuvres. Scored under Annex 7 FeV.

The Prüfungsfahrt takes place after the mandatory special-purpose lessons (Sonderfahrten) are complete and the theory exam has been passed. It is conducted by an officially recognised examiner from TÜV or DEKRA.

Components:

  1. Grundfahraufgaben on a practice area or in a quiet environment — e.g. reverse cornering, parking, emergency braking from speed.
  2. Driving in traffic following examiner instructions — in town, rural, motorway, depending on the route.

Scoring follows Annex 7 FeV. A single severe defect leads to immediate failure; several smaller defects can fail the exam in aggregate. The exam runs for at least 45 minutes.

The 2024 Klasse B failure rate in Germany sits around 38 percent — see Durchfallquote for the trend lines and likely drivers.
