Frequently asked questions about RoadReview.
Concise answers to the 24 questions we get most often. The German version of this page maintains a wider catalogue; if your question isn't covered here, drop us a line — we typically reply within one working day.
What RoadReview does, how it works and what it deliberately doesn't do.
What is RoadReview, exactly?
RoadReview is a mobile app and cloud backend for GPS-based documentation of practical driving lessons. The app records your route, speed and error positions during the lesson. Afterwards, the student sees what happened where — on the map, with explanation and 3D StreetView. Instructors and owners get a measurable progress view instead of gut feeling.
Which devices does RoadReview run on?
RoadReview ships as an Instructor App and a Student App, both for iOS and Android. There is no separate tablet edition — the apps are built for phone-sized screens because they live in the car during the lesson. School owners get an additional browser-based dashboard.
Does it work offline, even without signal?
Yes. The app keeps recording in tunnels, underground garages and rural areas without coverage. Notes and GPS data are encrypted locally and synced as soon as signal returns. You don't need a permanent connection to record a lesson or review it later.
Do I need to type while driving?
No. The primary input is a voice memo — one tap, then you speak the note. The app stores audio and geo-position; the student listens to it later in calm. If you prefer typing, do it after the lesson; during the drive, hands stay on the wheel.
Can I adapt the training record to our school's logic?
Yes. Topic structure, steps, scoring scale, mandatory fields, sort order and the school logo on the PDF are all set up during onboarding — no rigid template. If your school has its own logic (e.g. by class group or a custom step scale), we configure it. The usual path: one onboarding session, then your logic is live for every student.
Does the training record work without GPS tracking?
Yes, completely independently. You can use the training record purely as documentation — for theory lessons or migration cases without GPS yet. Schools that use GPS get a bonus: every record entry can be linked to the actual drive, which makes the audit trail stronger. Same UI either way.
Can I export the training record as a PDF?
Yes, anytime, per student. Print-ready, with the school's letterhead, no tool switch required. Typical use: before an audit, in a parent meeting, or when a student moves to another school. The export is included — not a separate add-on.
How long does the custom logic take to set up?
Usually a 30–45 minute session during onboarding: topic structure, scoring scale and mandatory fields are agreed together. After that your logic applies to every student; new topics or adjustments stay editable later. If you don't have a custom logic, we start with an industry default and you adjust over time.
Can I export a recorded drive as a file?
Yes. Every tracked drive can be downloaded from the student profile as a GPX file — the standard format every map app (Google Maps, Komoot, OsmAnd, Garmin, …) reads without conversion. The file contains the route with waypoints and timestamps, without personal notes or voice memos. Audit-friendly because the format is publicly documented.
Which file formats does the export support?
Currently GPX as the universal standard — most map and navigation apps open it without conversion. KML and TCX are wired up in the backend but not promoted in marketing. If your school needs a different format (e.g. CSV waypoints for an Excel report), drop us a line — most requests can be covered with a small helper.
Does "Open in Google Maps" work without the Maps app installed?
Yes. The "Open in Google Maps" button generates a standard Maps URL (`google.com/maps/dir/...`) with all waypoints. On mobile this opens the Maps app; on desktop, or if the app isn't installed, it opens Google Maps in the browser. If you'd rather not use Google, you can download the GPX file and open it in OsmAnd, Komoot or any other map app — you're not tied to Google.

GDPR, DPA, hosting, data takeout and the no-instructor-tracking rule.
Do other instructors see my student's training record?
No, by default. The record is visible to the assigned instructor and the school owner — other instructors at the same school don't see it. Students see only their own record, no comparison against peers, no ranking. The split is hard-coded in the permissions model and applies to multi-branch setups too.
Do my parents see everything I do in the lesson?
No. Your account belongs to you, not to your parents. There is no parent login and no automated reports to third parties. You decide what to share — a score screenshot for the family conversation usually does the job. Schools can bill the parent share of training costs without your detail data going along.
Do I get a Data Processing Agreement?
Yes — the DPA is included by default, no surcharge, no minimum order. You receive it before the first student onboarding. Hosting is in Germany; the entire data flow stays inside the EU. Sub-processors are listed transparently on /en/subprocessors.
Where is the data hosted?
On servers in Germany. Sub-processors are listed in full on /en/subprocessors — from hosting and email to maps. Personal data does not leave the EU; adequacy-decision providers are flagged separately, so you can audit every data flow.
Does RoadReview rate my driving instructor?
No. RoadReview is not an instructor-tracking system. School owners see capacity-level activity (lesson count, student pool), but no per-lesson rating. The data is for student progress, not instructor surveillance. This split is hard-coded in the data model.
Can I take my data with me if I cancel?
Yes, anytime. Full export of all student histories as PDF and CSV is free — not only in emergencies, but always. Our DPA additionally guarantees data takeout in case of insolvency. We don't lock you in.
Where RoadReview stands on Germany's evolving driver-training rules.
Is the training record audit-ready (FeV / state authority)?
The training record is the digital form of the legal proof-of-training file per student, as required by the German Driver Training Ordinance (FeV). With a GPS link, every entry is provable; without GPS it works as clean digital documentation instead of Excel or paper. Whether that satisfies a specific audit in your state depends on the auditor; we deliver complete, dated, exportable data.
How onboarding works, expectations, and how to leave again.
How does onboarding work?
Three steps: kickoff call (30 min, demo), DPA signature and free account setup, then personal training for instructors and the school owner. Setup takes under an hour, there's nothing to buy, and students get an onboarding mail. The first productive lesson usually happens the week after the kickoff.
Can I leave after the pilot phase?
